Mold Warning Signs
Mold can arise in a number of situations, most commonly where there is water damage, poor sealing, and excessive moisture. The presence of mold is not only unsightly, but it can cause numerous health issues and it can spread and destroy your property. If you have mold damage in your home or business, then you need to take action to remove the mold as soon as possible.
Here are a few signs that there may be mold damage lurking:
Where there is water damage, there is most likely mold growth. You can tell that you have water damage in your home if you hear a dripping sound from a pipe, your floors or walls exhibit an odd and puffy appearance, or if an area is soggy.
By catching water damage as early as possible, you’ll be able to address your mold problem in a timely manner. To check for mold, you’ll need to remove the upper material. For example, if the water has damaged your wall, then you’ll need to check behind and around the wall to properly take care of the mold in the area.
The Odor of Mold
Another sign that you have mold in your space is if there is a very musty and pungent smell that you cannot get rid of. An inability to see the mold while there is an odd smell in your home does not mean that the mold does not exist. In this case, the mold may simply be hidden behind your walls, floors, or in a cabinet where a pipe has broken.
If you’re trying to determine exactly where the mold is growing, it’s best to determine which space the smell is coming from. The earlier you address the situation, the sooner you can take action.
Symptoms of Allergies
If you aren’t prone to allergies or are experiencing allergies during off-season, then the allergies can be attributed to mold damage. Mold will cause allergies such as itchy and red eyes, sneezing, dizziness, nausea, wheezing, a sore throat, and nasal and sinus congestion.
Depending upon the type of mold that has developed in your home, your allergies may be more severe. For example, if black mold has developed, then you and other occupants may have an especially difficult time breathing. If you do find black mold in your home, then you’ll need to evacuate the space until the mold is cleared away.
The Appearance of Mold
Finally, you’ll know that you have mold if you can see the mold. As mentioned earlier, you’ll usually see mold where there is excessive moisture or water damage. Mold looks a lot like specs of dirt on the surface of a space. The specs are usually small, almost perfectly round, and they have fibers protruding forth.
Mold can also come in many different colors, but the most significant one to be most wary of is black mold. By keeping in mind this warning sign and those above, you can take immediate action to create a safer space.
